4. Catholic sites
The National Shrine of Our Lady of La VangThe National Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang
The Blessed Mother is believed to have first appeared in La Vang in 1798 to console persecuted Catholics during feudal times in Việt Nam. Subsequently a thatched chapel was erected at the site. That structure was eventually replaced with a stone sanctuary and church, which were then rebuilt several times between 1901 and 1928. In 1961, when Pope John XXIII granted the buildings the canonical status of cathedral, the bishops of Việt Nam declared it the National Marian Shrine. However, in 1972 during the Việt Nam War, the shrine was destroyed, and only remnants of it - a portion of its belltower and a back wall - remained.
About 500,000 pilgrims attended closing ceremonies for Việt Nam's Jubilee Year at the National Marian Shrine on January 6,2011. Papal special envoy Cardinal Ivan Dias - Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples - presided at the closing Mass. At the end of the Mass, Cardinal Dias blessed the foundation stone for a new 5,000-seat Basilica on the shrine.

On August 15, 2012, the first stone laying ceremony of the new La Vang Basilica was celebrated.
