4. Catholic Sites
Tà Pao Marian Shrine: The statue of Our Lady of Fatima on Mount Tà Pao was blessed by the late Bishop Marcel Piquet of Nha Trang on Dec 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, in 1959. The Mount Tà Pao statue was largely ignored during the Việt Nam War (1964-1975), when Catholics fled the region. In October 1980, local Catholics rediscovered the statue, which had been broken, and in 1991 they restored it. The statue became well-known in 1999, after three students said they saw the Blessed Mother appearing to fly to the other side of the mountain. People started rushing to the place to pray. News began circulating of many people returning to the Church after staying away for a long time, and of broken families reconciling.
On August 13, 2006, Bishop Paul Nguyễn Thanh Hoan of Phan Thiết led a special Mass to lay the foundation stone for Tà Pao Marian Shrine. The diocese built a 300-meter flight of stairs from the foot of the mountain up to the Marian statue, a 200-square-meter platform for Mass and a chapel beneath the platform.
Daily Masses at the shrine are at 5:15 and monthly Masses are at 7:00 on the 13th day of months.
